Developmental Therapeutic Vaulting (DTV) grew out of a need to move in a more agressive direction in the type of therapy provided to physically disabled riders at our riding center. We had already experimented with traditional vaulting, Feldenkreis techniques, guided imagery and other "non-traditional" methods. Hippotherapy was an option, but one our center could not afford at this time. Finding the right kind of horse, providing the extensive training required for a hippotherapy horse, and hiring a therapist were beyond our limited resources.
We felt the solution lay in expanding the existing vaulting positions to more closely approximate those done on a therapy ball in a therapist's office. These were organized in a developmental sequence based on how a baby develops from lying down to walking. Then, to help us remember the sequence, we photographed the positions, added notes explaining why we did what we did, and developed a testing measure that could be used to determine when the rider is ready to move to the next step in the sequence. (Click here to see a sample page.)
Eventually, all of this was further organized with additional information added, and put into a book, with each page encased in plastic to protect it from the elements at the ranch. The book is used to plan the lessons. Then, at the ranch, it becomes a reference in case we forget how to do each position.
We presented the Developmental Therapeutic Vaulting Technique at the NARHA Conference, and there was an overwhelming demand for copies of the book. As a result, we have made the book available to the public.
